“Laverne. I have a story that meets 2 of your passions: beating childhood cancer and classic cars. In 2000, Gerry Lebsack had terminal cancer. He was shocked to see a kids in the chemo chairs. The oncologist explained kids' cancer was rare so not very much money was spent on research. He was a car collector, so he suggested that our Rotary Club host a car show at the Olympic Oval. They removed the ice in June for maintenance, leaving a large space for 200+ cars. The car guys loved it. We set it up like a museum with red carpet and stanchions along the walkway. No one could touch the vehicles. I learned car clubs are like church. The Mustang guys didn't want to be next to the Corvette... etc. Ha! We raised some money. I did a lot of media, which drew people to the event and raised awareness of the Kids' Cancer Foundation. Christine Wandzura started it after losing her 6-year-old son. She is now Rick McCiver's wife. Great lady. Thanks for what you're doing.”
